Connecting to the Cubes (Essentials 2011-2012)


Note: This information pertains to Jet Essentials 2011 and 2012

Once the Jet Data Manager has been installed and configured you will want to create a connection to your cubes. This article shows you how to create this connection.

Before creating a connection to the cubes you will need to set permissions for your users.

Creating a Connection to the Cubes using Jet Essentials

This method will work with all recent versions of Jet Essentials. If you are using an older version you will want to connect to the cubes using the build in excel functionality detailed in the next section.

1. Open Excel.

2. Navigate to the Jet tab and click Data Source Settings.

3. Click Add. The New Data Source dialog will open.

4. In the Name: field enter a friendly name for your cubes. In this example we choose the name Jet Cubes. In the Type: drop down specify a Cube connection. Click OK .

5. On the Connection page, enter the name of the server where the cubes reside. In this example the cubes reside on the local machine. In the Database field select your OLAP database. Click OK .

6. Click the Pivot Table button to create a pivot table. The Insert PivotTable dialog will open. Choose the cube you want to analyze. Click OK .

Creating a Connection to the Cubes using the Built in Excel Functionality

1. Open Excel.

2. Navigate to the Data tab, select From Other Sources From Analysis Services . The Data Connection Wizard opens.

3. In the Server name: field enter the name of the server. In this example we used jet-ent-2008.

4. From the dropdown box select the database that contains your cubes. For example JetNavOlap or JetGpOlap.

5. Deselect the Connect to a specific cube or table → click Next.

6. In the Friendly Name: field go ahead and assign a name of your choice. In this example we choose Jet Cubes. Click Finish.

7. Select the cube you would like to use and click OK.

Re-connecting to the Cubes

1. Open Excel.

2. Navigate to the Data tab and click Existing Connections. The Existing Connections dialog opens.

3. Select the Cubes that you created in the previous section.

4. Select the cube you would like to use, click OK.
