Jet Reports User Information - Policies & Procedures

This article provides an overview of the different user types that are available in Jet Reports. It also explains Jet Reports policies and procedures.

Use the links below to jump to each corresponding section:

User Types

  • Viewer

A Viewer license, at minimum, is required for each individual user that refreshes the data, changes filters, schedules, and uses drilldown in reports or dashboards. Viewers can also create an ad hoc analysis from Jet Cubes in PivotTable format with Jet Analytics, or view and refresh Jet Analytics dashboards viewed in the Jet Hub. Viewers are named automatically during the activation process, or added manually in the Jet License Portal.

  • Jet Reports Designer

A Jet Reports Designer is a named user that can create or modify Jet reports solely within the Jet Excel add-in. They also have access to all Viewer user abilities.

  • Jet Analytics Designer

A Jet Analytics Designer is a named user that can use the full suite of Jet Reports products, specifically, creating or modifying Jet reports within the Jet Excel add-in, Jet Data Manager, and the Jet Dashboard Builder. To authenticate a user for a Designer license, the user’s full name, e-mail address, and domain name/login must be provided

For more information, see  What is a Designer? A Viewer? An Excel User?

Within Jet Budgets (assigned within Jet Hub), the following user types are available:

  • Budget Owner

The individual who can create, edit, enter data into, and approve budgets.

  • Budget Contributor

A Collaborator can be assigned work items by a Budget Owner and enter data for the budget.

  • Budget Approver

An Approver (assigned to a work item by the Budget Owner) can review and approve/reject budgets and modify work items.

Connectors and Licensing (Activation Codes)

  • Jet Reports Connector

A Jet Reports Connector is required to connect directly to a data source. Data sources may be databases or other sources, such as files or Excel documents, made available through ODBC or OLE connections. Each data source requires a separate Jet Reports Connector.

Jet Reports Connectors are available for Microsoft Dynamics Business Central, NAV, GP, F&SCM, and Universal. The Universal Connector will connect to most ODBC/OLE compliant databases.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV/BC – This connector type verifies the license number on the Dynamics NAV/BC server. In versions newer than Jet Reports 2019, this connector will allow you to connect to any number of databases that use the corresponding ERP.

Microsoft Dynamics GP – This connector type automatically translates the master and company databases in the Microsoft Dynamics GP solution. One connector will manage all required GP databases.

Microsoft Dynamics F&SCM - This hybrid connector provides near real-time, on-demand access to operational and financial data in the Dynamics F&SCM ERP.

Note: Some areas of the product and licensing may refer to Universal when supporting one of the other connector types. This does not indicate that there is an error in your licensing or product.

  • Analytics Connector

An Analytics Connector is required for each data source that is accessed by Data Warehouses or Cubes. This connectivity is typically accomplished using the Jet Data Manager. Analytics connectors provide access to the Data Warehouse and Cubes data sources within Excel. If an Analytics Connector is used to access data from a data source, a separate Jet Reports Connector for the same source is not needed

  • Dynamics NAV Sessions

For versions prior to Dynamics NAV 2013, Jet Reports requires a Dynamics NAV session while calculating. If Dynamics NAV is already open on the computer, Jet Reports requires an additional session during calculation. Because these versions utilize a concurrent connection while accessing data, a separate DCO connection from Microsoft is not required.

  • Jet Global Activation Code

Jet Global products require an Activation Code. Web-based Activation replaced Jet license files (.JLFs) with the release of Jet version 2013. The Activation Code is provided at time of sale. You can view Activation Codes and license details for you and your customers through the Jet License Portal. For customers that are current on AEP you can also make some changes to Jet licenses using the Licensing Portal, including Designer and Viewer names or connector details.
