Background Reporting in the Jet Excel add-in


Applies to versions 2018R2 and higher

Overview

The Jet Excel add-in includes the ability to run reports saved on your local computer and continue to use Excel, or even run reports from your local desktop without loading Excel at all.

The Run in Background feature is supported for reports that are saved on your local machine. Running reports from a cloud-hosted environment is not supported.

Running in Background from Excel

  1. Open your report in Excel.
  2. On the Jet ribbon, select Run > Run in Background

  3. If your report is configured to prompt for Report Options, a dialog will be displayed, asking for the specific parameters to use for this run.

        1. Review the options and, if necessary, correct them.

        2. Click Run. A warning dialog box will be displayed.

        3. Click OK to continue running the report. 

    Your report is closed, a new Excel workbook is opened for you, the Jet tray application is started, and a notification is displayed letting you know that your report is running.

    Once your report is completed and available for viewing, a notification is displayed.

  4. Click the notification or the Jet icon in the tray to display the Jet Reports Report Queue.

    In the Jet Reports Report Queue, you can see the status of any reports that are currently running, completed and available for viewing, stopped, or pending.

  5. Click Open for the report you wish to view.

    Your report is opened in Excel.

Running in Background from your Desktop or folder

  1. Navigate to the local folder where you have saved your report(s), right-click on the selected file(s), and select Run Jet Report.

    You can select up to 100 reports to run at one time.
  2. If any of the selected reports are configured to prompt for Report Options, a dialog appears. In that case, make sure that the options are correct, and click Run All

    The selected reports are run. The Jet tray application will start, and a notification will be displayed letting you know that your reports are running.

    You can click on the notification or the Jet icon in the tray to view the progress of your reports. 
  3. When a report is completed, a notification is displayed. Click a notification or the Jet icon in the tray to display the Jet Report Queue.

    In the Jet Report Queue, you can see the status of any report that is: currently running, completed and available for viewing, stopped, or pending.

  4. Click Open for any Completed report you want to view.

    The report is opened in Excel.

Troubleshooting

Report results in an error

If a report is unable to complete, the report will appear in the Stopped section of the Jet Report Queue.

You can click View Error to get additional information about the specific error that was encountered.
