how can I tell which table contains the data that I wish to list in my report? I was looking to list payroll benefit data but cannot find those fields.

It is hard to say what the right table is to use. My NAV database doesn't use payroll tables so I can't help you very well. You might be able to get some useful information from the RTC. You can click on the Help button and click "About this page". The RTC will sometimes list the SourceTable for the information you are seeing on the screen. If you have access to the Classic Client (in NAV 2009), you can find the information on the form and click Tools>Zoom. This will display the name of the table in the page header.
If these don't give you the information you are looking for, I would suggest going to your NAV partner. They should have some insight as to where the information is in your database.
