JRDS and Designers and Jet Licences

Hi All

I am being increasingly asked to configure JRDS data sources, and while I get them to work, I really don't understand how this happens and I would like to be able 'fix' issues better.    

I am trying to understand the relationship between the Jet / Excel users and NAV when connecting through a JRDS:

1.  How does NAV know who I am logging is as for data security

2. How is my Client Jet Licence validate against the JRDS data source

3.  How is the user validated as a designer

  Hi Malcolm -

  I'll try to paraphrase the JRDS Admin Guide.

  When you use Jet Remote Data Service Administration Shell to create the NAV Remote Data Service Instance, one of the parameters is to specify which type of authentication to use for accessing the NAV SQL database.

  - Windows authentication (current user)

  - Windows authentication (other user)

  - SQL Server authentication

  If you specify to use the current user's Windows credentials, no other information is required in the configuration.  The user's Windows credentials will be used by NAV to determine the correct security settings.

  If you specify to use another user's Windows credentials, you must also provide the UserID, Password, and Domain for the account that all users will utilize.

  If you specify to use SQL Server authentication, you must also provide the UserID and password for the account that all users will utilize.

   

  By default, all users have access to the JRDS data source itself.  If you wish, you can use the Set-JetNavRemoteDataServiceInstance cmdlet to configure user and group authorization rules to individual JRDS instances within Windows Internet Information Services (IIS).

  The user account specified (windows or SQL) is validated against the settings in your Jet license (just as with any other data source).

  If you need a more in-depth answer (and the online Help Center isn't providing the answers), I would suggest submitting a request to the Jet Tech Support team.  They have more experience with the JRDS.
